Compo

JP Weaver’s first product, Compo is a little known form of relief ornament used in interior architectural décor, and decoration of furniture, fireplaces, ceilings and walls. Historically known as composition ornament, Compo today is nearly lost as a decorative art medium. However, Compo’s role in architectural history is significant: it has survived over four hundred years in Europe and can be traced to 16th-century Italy.

Compared to Compo, the carved wood available today is very crude and imprecise. Fine carving is difficult to find, and is generally cost-prohibitive. Limited machine carvings are available, but have to be glued into place and are difficult to work with and handle. There are embossed woods on the market, but these look flat and do not offer the rich, carved look that Compo provides.

The place of compo is well established: a decoration of low relief and fine quality for custom design work. Compo is also a “fast” medium as compared to its competitors. With it, wondrous architectural effects can be accomplished within as little as 48 hours.
